A solid wood floor is made of the same type of wood all the way through and is almost indestructible. It can be sanded many times. Solid wood is a natural product, which means it “works.” When humidity rises or falls outside the normal range (about 35–65% relative humidity, as often occurs in Denmark), you should expect the boards to expand or contract. This reaction may cause small or large cracks, gaps between the boards, or the so-called “washboard effect.”

No, solid plank floors must not be glued with tongue and groove or laid as floating floors, since each board needs room to move individually. Solid floors must either be nailed down or fully glued to a fixed subfloor.

Floating installation is the most common way to lay wooden floors, as it is quick and easy. However, fully glued floors offer many more benefits. A fully glued floor means that the wooden floor is glued directly to a solid subfloor (concrete or chipboard). This creates a completely different room sound and much better acoustics.

Advantages of a fully glued floor:

• Much better acoustics in the room (feels more solid).

• The floor can be laid in one continuous surface – e.g., through doorways.

• No need for threshold strips in doorways or aluminum strips by tiles.

• Option to grout at transitions to tiles.

• More stability.

• Better heat transfer with underfloor heating.

• Kitchens and other heavy furniture can be installed directly on the floor.

• No need for skirting boards – elastic jointing against walls is enough.

The difference between floating and glued floors can best be experienced in our showroom.

There are pros and cons to both surfaces. Lacquered floors cannot be treated or repaired locally, which is a disadvantage. Another drawback is that lacquered floors tend to wear and scratch more quickly in high-traffic areas, such as hallways, kitchens, or entrances. The advantage of lacquer is that it requires very little maintenance in the first years. Many people also find lacquered floors look somewhat artificial. We recommend using hardwax oil, which provides both durability and requires less long-term maintenance.

Oiled floors require maintenance every year, while hardwax-oiled floors only need care every two to three years. The surface can easily be refreshed and repaired locally. We recommend choosing an oiled surface with hardwax, as it is naturally hardened. This solution has the most advantages.
